Harry Potter Recipes: Chocolate Frogs

Last week I shared with you how to make the most adorable Mandrake Cupcakes for your Harry Potter bash! Even though these were inspired by the movie I wanted to make some Harry Potter Recipes of the candy as it was portrayed in the book. One of the most iconic scenes of Harry enjoying his new life for me has always been when he purchases candy from the HoneyDuke’s cart. It is then that you truly realize that he has come from living underneath the stairs in a closet to enjoying what the wizarding world has to offer.  Watching the magical chocolate frog climbing up and out of the train window is rather enchanting. While our chocolate frogs don’t move, they do sparkle – which to me is rather magical!

I’ll admit I was definitely a little worried about making chocolate frogs. Because I’d never dealt with melting  chocolate!

But you know what, it was pretty gosh dang easy.

So easy that I actually would prefer to make fun chocolate molds for family and friends around Christmas time instead of baking.

Harry Potter Recipes: Chocolate Frogs

Basically to make these chocolate frogs you need chocolate wafers, a frog mold and some luster dust.

That’s it!

Begin by placing your half your bag of chocolate wafers in a microwave-safe bowl.

Microwave them in twenty-five second increments, but make sure to use a spatula to stir them in between or they won’t melt!

Fill the chocolate molds with the melted chocolate. Be sure to use a spoon or spatula to press the chocolate all the way down into the mold.

Pop them into the freezer for about 15 minutes, then remove them from the mold.

At this point you should take an xacto (or regular sharpened) knife and cut off the remaining chocolate that pooled up where it wasn’t supposed to.

Be sure to dust them with bronze luster dust to add a hint of magic!

But as we all know, chocolate frog aren’t complete without their packaging.

Now if I had bought frogs in their packaging it as $40 for 4 of them. I had 12 people coming to the party, that was not in my budget!

Instead I bought the chocolate frog packaging as a digital file on Etsy here. We had it printed on cardstock. Then myself and family cut them out with both xacto knives and scissors. Afterwards my and my husband’s siblings very graciously folded them.

It took two hours to get all 12 printables for each of the candies folded and put together with four pairs of hands. So if you go this route, know that it will take a LOT of time!

This is one of the main reasons that I recommend taking a more time. Planning is one thing but actually executing all these Harry Potter Recipes in tandem is a little tricky.

If you find you have more chocolate left over just warm up the chocolate again until it’s finished in 2o second increments.  Because I was making fizzing whizbees, Mandrake Cupcakes and licorice wands I couldn’t honestly tell you how many frogs 1 bag will make.

Thanks for reading!
