Pumpkin Spice Spiderweb Halloween Pancakes

As you all know, I’m a Halloween aficionado.  If the posts about my favorite Halloween Quotes, Halloween Appetizer Bar, and Harvest Moon Cake didn’t convince you of that then frankly I’m not quite sure what may do that. I think that there’s an idolized version of how many of us plan to spend Halloween, and then there’s real life. For instance, coordinating pumpkin carving is still in the works. And I didn’t get to buy Halloween themed cereals yet. Also forecast of a Halloween Costume is zero. But being an adult is taking your plans and tweaking them for your real life resources. So in lieu of Halloween being another normal working day for all of ya’ll, I wanted you to be able to have a festive Halloween breakfast! That’s why I made these Pumpkin Spice Spiderweb Halloween Pancakes.

Now the original recipe for these Halloween Pancakes (as so many others) did not go as planned.

And I’m pretty up front with all of our readers.

So just to give you an idea of how things went the first time, I started by making the batter too thick. Also I forgot you really have to babysit pancakes and I was trying to multitask. I was thinking it would still work, this was a mistake and led to the fatality of three Halloween pancakes via burning. (RIP).

And if you’re wanting to picture this scene my pan was smoking immensely (because of some leftover oil apparently). The smoke alarms were going off and my little doggos were heading for cover.

This was as I was trying to open our windows which are not human friendly and coughing a little due to smoke inhalation. And in the background my Christmas station was blaring with the lyrics “with a 39 and a half foot POLEEEEEE.”

Then I commenced to opening the screen door and waving it with a slow cadence as I wondered if my neighbors:

  1. Thought I was dead because of all the smoke and alarms.
  2. Were upset because of the ridiculously loud Christmas music so early in the morning.

And if anyone was really concerned I was in my striped Christmas pajamas which is not how I like to greet guests.

The second batch of Halloween Pancakes went much better I assure you! (Even though they didn’t turn out quite like I thought they would.)

Making Your Pumpkin Spice Halloween Pancakes

You begin by combining all of your dry ingredients which include Bisquick, cinnamon, ginger, allspice, mace and nutmeg.

Then you’ll mix in your eggs, milk, canned pumpkin, and vanilla extract.

Then after this heat up a griddle/pan onto medium heat that is well greased.

Pour your batter into the pan in pancake puddles.

Once you begin to see bubbles near the edge of your pancakes, turn them and cook for just a little longer until the underside is golden brown. For full size pancakes, this is a few minutes. However I was making smaller pancakes because I wanted to photograph them for height purposes, so mine were done in about another minute.

Draping Your Marshmallow Spiderwebs

This next step I learned a lot from, because I did it two or three times.

I want to make this VERY CLEAR. If you choose to decorate them with marshmallow spiderwebs you need to be as fast as Speedy Gonzalez when serving them.

I tell you this because I really expected the spiderwebs to hold their structure long enough for me to do three rounds of photographing.

Because that would have been too considerate.

Whether you’re making these just for yourself or your family I highly recommend 1) keeping them warm for a few minutes out of the pan and then decorating them as soon as you have a stack or 2) doing it immediately with a stack out of the pan.

If you  have kids just do it with your partner as an assembly line.

Either way they need to be served IMMEDIATELY for your guests/children to admire the magic of the spiderwebs.

So to do this part, you’ll need to warm up marshmallows in a greased measuring cup.

For me, I started with three marshmallows being warmed up for 15 seconds. However, if you have a lot of pancakes ready to go you may want to warm up more product at once.

Essentially all you want to do is see your marshmallows puff up in the microwave.

This makes them gelatinous but not so hot they’re soup or will burn you.

Once you pull them out of the microwave it’s time to get up to your eyeballs in marshmallows.

I was going to try to use a fork but really you’ll need to use your hands.

After making sure they’re not too hot, take a ball of marshmallows, roll them with your hands and then stretch them across the top of your pancakes.

Be sure to anchor them to other pancakes or the plate on your way down.

As soon as you’re satisfied with your webs, serve these babies!

I found maple syrup and butter to sit well with the marshmallows because the pancakes aren’t sweetened really.

A Few Final Notes

I wanted to add spiders to this creation and was planning on using butter frozen into a chocolate spider mold.

However, this did not work. So if you’re thinking you need spiders for your web just get some food safe spider rings and trail them up the plate!

This recipe was a learning experience, but it’s a fun breakfast if you have kiddos at home that would think it was cool/are a Halloween nut like me. This recipe is MESSY, so it may not be the perfect one for parents mid-week. But it’s perfect for a Sunday morning breakfast this time of year. But it may be a little hairy to fix the morning of if the holiday falls on Wednesday like this year.
