11 Spooky Halloween Quotes to Celebrate the Season

There’s just something about how putting everything you’re feeling into words that brings peace to the mind. Maybe you’re a poem crafter that enjoys tea in the afternoon and baring your entire soul on a page. Perhaps you’re a casual Pinterest quote browser that likes to pin aesthetically pleasing short quips. Or maybe you’re always in search of motivational quotes while you attack your problems with a ridiculous amount of coffee. Whatever kind of quote connoisseur you are, we’re certain you’ll enjoy these 10 Spooky Halloween Quotes to Celebrate the Season!

Halloween for me has glowing Jack-O-Lanterns on every porch that beckon during evening walks. The 31st will be forever coated in the delicate threads of the mass produced dollar store spiderweb you have tented the house with. Halloween promises orange fairy lights with ample plastic bats, rats, spiders and bugs creeping throughout the house. It’s  celebrating your haul of all the candies by dumping your pail into a pile on the floor, and then trading with your siblings. Halloween is eating 90 cent Sonic corn dogs while watching Hocus Pocus for the hundreth time.

With all of that being said, here are some of my most favorite Halloween Quotes that for me capture what the holiday is really all about.

10 Spooky Halloween Quotes to Celebrate the Season

1. “By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes” – William Shakespeare.

Halloween Quotes

Now, where are my Shakespeare fans? [me currently wildly doing Jazz Hands like Dwight in The Office due to blackmail]. I’ve always loved how Shakespeare wrote. For me the  eloquence and smaller zany bits of Romeo and Juliet in my 8th Grade classroom was enough to sell me forever. A Midsummer Nights Dream, Macbeth, Much Ado About Nothing and even the more serious Othello will forever have a special place in my heart.

Yes, you have to work a little bit to read it. I mean in all seriousness we were graded on annotation. But seriously, so worth it to truly have an appreciation for that type of literature. While this isn’t exclusively something that belongs in a collection of Halloween Quotes, it’s definitely spooky.

2. “When witches go riding, and black cats are seen, the moon laughs and whispers, ’tis near Halloween” – Unknown

Black cats? Yeah, my favorite ever is Thackery Binx and will be until the day I die. I’m not gonna lie when I was little Sean Murray literally rocked my world and was the best at styling the man ponytail in the history of ever. But black cats will always seem a little magical to me and it’s probably because in the folklore surrounding witches/Halloween/magic etc. In fact the pilgrims in Plymouth literally thought that witches would shape-shift into them! [Hocus Pocus literally makes so much more sense now].

Also, who doesn’t love a full moon? The vintage cartoons painted with them are literally MY FAVORITE. Also I will never forget the scene(s) in Halloween Town where Marnie Piper is flits across the night sky. Ever. So yeah, this quote takes me back to Halloweens of my youth.

3. “But I can think of nothing on earth so beautiful as the final haul on Halloween night, which, for me, was ten to fifteen pounds of candy, a riot of colored wrappers and hopeful fonts, snub-nosed chocolate bars and SweeTARTS, the seductive rattle of Jujyfruits and Good & Plenty and lollipopsticks all akimbo, the foil ends of mini LifeSavers packs twinkling like dimes, and a thick sugary perfume rising up from the pillowcase.” – Steve Almond

So there was no way the full Halloween quote was going to sit well on a graphic, so I just took a portion. But I do absolutely adore the entire thing! I loved candy when I was little. And I get it, there are always going to be WEIRD candies in there. I’m not talking about off-brand, I’m talking about legitimately weird that you probably never knew existed. Also there’s the fun Halloween versions of all of the typical candies.

Plus my personal favorite – PIXIE STICKS!!! I mean if pageant kiddos shoot them down for a little energy before stepping on the runway they’re not all bad right?

4. “The tartness of an apple ripened by summer’s last days paired with the dull sweetness of caramel will always be reminiscent of Halloween Night.”

I love caramel apples. Are they messy to eat? Yeah. Do they almost glue your jaws shut like if you cut yourself on something rusty? Yeah, it’s guaranteed. But the smell of caramel hanging in the air will always remind me of autumn, and thus the black and orange crepe paper adorning the house.

5. “Shadows of a thousand years rise again unseen, Voices whisper in the trees, Tonight is Halloween!” – Dexter Kozen

If trees whispering doesn’t remind you of Halloween, you have some issues. Because they don’t normally do that. But when you anthropomorphize them and add the shadow reference it definitely creates spookiness!

6. “It’s a full moon tonight and all the weirdos are out” – Dani Dennison

I don’t know about you, but for me Hocus Pocus is a staple. Like I’ll watch it year round. Even if you’re currently judging me a little bit through your screen you have to admit that it’s a must for Halloween! And it’s chalk-ful of some of the greatest Halloween Quotes to casually throw around this time of year.

Not only does this quote take into account all of the witches, werewolves, (and Dani’s adorable circa 90’s witch costume) the night of the 31st but it also touches on a phenomenon that is very real – emergency room visits increase on full moon nights. And in general, nature is pretty active on it’s own too, so there is some truth behind a few superstitions surrounding full moons after all.

7. “There is magic in the night when pumpkins glow by moonlight” – Unknown

Do I like trick or treating? Yeah. But pumpkin carving and actually admiring finished jack-o-lanterns, that’s my jam. I will admit that sometimes it gets a little chilly carving pumpkins and their guts are notably slimy. But what other time of the year do you actually get to do that? NEVER. Carving pumpkins was my dad’s thing.  As in enough to line the entire porch of our old Victorian house. American flag? Bronc Rider? Classic pumpkin face? You got it.

He’s always been artistic and even used to sculpt and design furniture professionally full time until we came along. I absolutely love the finished product peering back at me while a glimmering tealight coruscates behind the edges of the design.

8.“Like delicate lace, So the threads intertwine, Oh, gossamer web Of wond’rous design! Such beauty and grace Wild nature produces…” – Bill Watterson

I’ve always loved spiderwebs, and more specifically how they gleam in the sunshine. This is one of those Halloween quotes that just also pays homage to nature in general. They are incredibly intricate to look at and of course take an immense amount of skill to produce! Spiders became involved with Halloween because people associated them with – you guessed it – witchcraft. While they’re not my absolute favorite insect out there, I do always try to capture them for release outside if I find them in my home.

Real spiderweb is a far cry from the initial batted mess that you can purchase near Halloween but the faux version absolutely still does the trick!

9. “Miraculously, smoke curled out of his own mouth, his nose, his ears, his eyes, as if his soul had been extinguished within his lungs at the very moment the sweet pumpkin gave up it’s incensed ghost” – Ray Bradbury

You couldn’t expect me to just not throw another quote about jack-o-lanterns in here right? Here it is.

10.”The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper” – W. B. Yeats

This is not just one of my favorite Halloween quotes. For me, this resonates everyday even if it is exceptionally notable near this season. Whether you explain it through science, God’s grace or simply the magic of nature that entangles the two there is a little magic all around you every day. Have you ever seen a glorious sunset? What about wildflowers popping up across a meadow? I get it, everyone sees the world a little different. But celebrating these daily is definitely a part of some people’s lives.

11. “There is a child in every one of us who is still a trick-or-treater looking for a brightly lit front porch” – Robert Brault

Trick or treating at your age may be a little weird. I went as a sophomore in high school more to tag along with my friends. I had a door shut in my face. As far as I’m concerned if you put considerable effort into a costume and are not a total creep, I will give you candy. If you do find a kiddo to tag along with for supervision you can enjoy the best of both worlds while being socially acceptable (pro-tip).

I tried to really pick Halloween quotes that resonated with me. Did I miss any of your favorites? Be sure to drop them in the comments below!
